My thoughts:
Author Melanie Card really makes you earn the pay off in this series...in a good way! She takes her time releasing each additional volume to the Chronicles of a Reluctant (we're averaging about two years between books) as well as the slow burn romance between our necromancer, Ward, and the risen-from-the dead assassin bound to him, Celia Carlyle.
Card's an excellent crafts(wo)man when it comes to world-building and I'm not ashamed to admit one of my favorite parts of this book was the city-with-an-attitude Dulthyne. It's a city of BADNESS, and, for our little band of heroes which now includes the tracker Nazarius de'Serra, it holds answers, dangers, and a dark force Ward unleashed that now needs to be contained--quickly.
This third installment is a keeper and by no means does it wrap up all of our characters' issues--in fact, it leaves it wide open for a fourth book that we'll just have to be patient and wait for. (Harrumph!)
If you haven't read the first two books in Card's series, it's highly recommended you backtrack and do so--these aren't standalone novels and you'll really benefit from understanding the back story attached to each character.
Bottom line?
Highly recommended!
